About Lila Cockrell
Lila Cockrell was a trailblazing leader and the first woman to serve as Mayor of San Antonio. A true pioneer in Texas politics, she broke barriers and dedicated her life to public service.
Mayor of San Antonio
Elected in 1975, Cockrell became San Antonio’s first female mayor. She served two non-consecutive terms (1975–1981 and 1989–1991), championing economic development, urban revitalization, and improved city services. Her leadership helped shape modern San Antonio into the vibrant city it is today.
U.S. Navy WAVES Service
During World War II, Lila Cockrell proudly served in the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES), the women’s branch of the U.S. Naval Reserve. Her military service instilled in her a deep sense of duty, discipline, and commitment to community that defined her later political career.
